Clinical Rotations
The residency year is divided into 12 one-month rotation experiences. The first month is a training month in drug distribution services. Residents provide drug distribution services "on-line" for six shifts per six-week period, four of which are weekend shifts.
Required rotations include the following:
- Two 2-month "core" rotations
- One pediatric rotation
- Two management rotations (clinical and operations management)
As one of the largest providers of inpatient behavioral health services in the Upper Midwest, the University of Minnesota Medical Center – Riverside Campus, in cooperation with the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry, is a national leader in the research and treatment of mental illness. Eleven inpatient units as well as numerous day treatment programs and outpatient clinics, provide care for adults, seniors, children and adolescents suffering from mental illness and/or chemical dependency.
The General Practice Residency focusing in Psychiatry (PGY1) will consist of core rotations in psychiatric pharmacy, as well as elective options tailored to the resident’s interests. A publishable residency research project will be designed and completed by the resident. Additional opportunities to participate in research and/or clinical writing are available.

Other responsibilities will include psychiatric medication consults, writing drug reviews, leading patient Medication Groups, assisting in pharmacy student rotations, inservices to pharmacists and nursing staff, and drug information services.

Qualifications: Pharm.D. degree; Completion of a general practice residency or equivalent experience is preferred; We will also consider motivated candidates with a strong interest in psychiatric pharmacy practice.

Other longitudinal expectations of the residency program include the following:
- Completion of a pharmacy residency project for presentation at the Midwest Residency Conference
- Preparation of poster presentation for University HealthSystem Consortium Meeting
- Attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical and University HealthSystem Consortium Meetings
- Preparation of Formulary Reviews
- Participation and attendance at Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and Formulary and Drug Use Committee
- Completion of a DUE project
- Off-site visit to at least one other area institution
- Provide teaching assistant services to the College of Pharmacy
- Assist in precepting College of Pharmacy students
- Attend weekly staff meetings and weekly residency conferences
Evaluations
The Resident is evaluated monthly by the rotation preceptor, using the Residency Learning Systems (RLS) Objectives.
The Program Director also evaluates the Resident's performance and makes any changes in the resident’s individual plan on a quarterly basis.
